Learn the skill of clothesmaking and tailoring

AdultLearningLew
16 Jan '19

Beginners to garment making will learn key skills & processes in garment construction- including cutting out, piecing together, fitting, stitching, pressing, the correct and safe use of tools and equipment, understanding and making simple adaptations to commercially bought patterns & choosing styles and suitable fabrics. You will sample a variety of techniques throughout the course and in this 6 week class you should, for example, be able to complete an easy dress, top, skirt or trousers. Learners with greater experience may opt to make a more structured garment such as a formal shirt, a pair of tailored trousers or a lined skirt- and please be aware that you may still need to work on your garment between sessions to complete it. More complex garments such as jackets or coats will require considerably longer to complete- so you will need to enrol onto the follow-on Summer term class to do this. Emphasis will be placed on pattern adaptation & fitting, as well as ideas for creating professional finishes for garments using traditional and modern techniques, such as how and where to use canvas & fusible interfacings to create structure. Hand sewing and sewing machines skills would be useful, but not essential.
